Phonics & Reading

The ability to read and write well is a vital skill for all children, paving the way for an enjoyable and successful school experience.

When children enter the Reception class they take part in high-quality phonics sessions every day. These are fun sessions involving lots of speaking, listening and games, where the emphasis is on children’s active participation. They learn to use their phonic knowledge for reading and writing activities and in their independent play. These sessions continue throughout KS1 and into KS2, where the focus shifts more to the teaching and learning of spelling, which children find harder than reading.

At Cherhill School we use a progressive reading scheme. This scheme has a range of genres including comics, non-fiction, traditional stories and play scripts. The content of these books uses well known characters and adaptations of traditional texts to engage the children.
