Building Learning Power

Building Learning Power (BLP) was developed by Guy Claxton and is about helping young people to become better learners, both in school and out.

At Cherhill, we have embraced this programme and it is now embedded in all aspects of learning, closely linking to the Gem Project.
The main aims of Building Learning Power are:

  • To teach pupils how to be effective learners
  • To create life-long learners
  • To give confidence in learning ability
  • To motivate people to achieve

At Cherhill we have used the ‘tree’ as a visual representation and these core principles are based on 6 dispositions that are our ‘roots’ of the tree. The skills within these, are the leaves that will continue to grow and change as the children move up through the school.

Respect & Responsibility

We added the final two Rs ourselves, so we were able to focus on one per term. Each term we focus on one disposition and explore in depth the skills children need to develop, to become better learners. We launch the ‘R’ with a whole school assembly, whereby we focus explicitly on what this disposition would look like. Then the teachers provide opportunities for the children to develop the skills throughout the term.
